HOW TO CARRY OUT A CONSERVATION JOINT REPAIR
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?
For long-lasting window restoration, it is recommended to strengthen all joints along the lower rails of windows — even if there is no visible decay. These joints are especially prone to failure, and addressing them early prevents the need for more costly repairs later.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION
-
Widen the joint – Use a mechanical router to gently open the joint to a minimum width of 4mm and a depth of at least 10mm.
-
Remove paint – Strip away any existing paint from around the joint.
-
Sand the area – Use sandpaper to smooth the joint interior and surrounding timber, removing any loose fibres.
-
Check moisture levels – Ensure the timber moisture content is below 18% using an electronic moisture meter. If it’s higher, carefully dry the area with a hot-air blower (take care not to scorch the wood).
-
Stabilise the joint – Apply Evermend Stabiliser generously over the joint and surrounding area, allowing 20 minutes for full penetration.
-
Apply the resin – Mix Evermend Resin 4 Hour and apply liberally into the joint, filling all gaps completely.
-
Allow to cure – Let the resin cure fully (refer to product data sheets for curing times).
-
Finish the repair – Once cured, sand the area to your desired smoothness and apply a quality primer before painting.
